Fifty-one zoos are featured in detail: their histories are documented - in many cases for the first time - and their present appearance is described in detail.
Special sections focus on additional aspects of the British and Irish zoo world, and its history.
"...the need for zoos has never been greater than it is today. And, in Great Britain and Ireland, we are fortunate indeed that our small islands hold so many very good zoos from which we can benefit so much."
Founded in 1995 the Independent Zoo Enthusiasts Society is a group of like-minded supporters of the world's best zoos and aquariums. We believe that zoos are interesting in themselves, not just as conservational vessels (however important that function may be). Therefore, we take an interest in animal husbandry techniques, zoo history, zoos around the world, zoo ephemera and, indeed any aspect of wild animals in human care. This is probably best reflected in our quarterly magazine Zoo Grapevine and International Zoo News and in our published books.
